Welcome to Torreense Store
For over fifty years, 223 Mill Street has been a cornerstone of the Kitchener community. What began decades ago as a bustling neighborhood corner grocer evolved in 1972 into a vibrant, dedicated space bringing the rich, authentic flavors of Portugal straight to Waterloo Region. We were celebrating the beauty, warmth, and depth of Portuguese culture long before it became a global travel trend—and we have been doing it with pride ever since.
Saved by Family, Driven by Mission
In 2017, when our beloved local landmark faced the threat of closing its doors forever, our family stepped in. We purchased the business not just to run a shop, but as an act of love and culture. We refused to let this vital piece of our community’s history fade away.
Today, our core mission is to keep our heritage alive and thriving. We serve as a living, breathing bridge to Portugal, an 'anchor' ensuring that future generations remain deeply linked to their roots, their history, and their identity. Since 1972 Torreense Store (Tor-ense), however you can say our name, means something unique to everyone who steps inside. For some it is a place to cure the missing of home (matar saudades), where the familiar sights, languages, and aromas bring instant comfort of the memories from the past. For others like the curious traveler and foodie it is a cultural discovery, inviting you to experience a genuine piece of Portugal through exceptional food, imports, and hospitality. Our core belief is to choose every item with care and to be discovered, enjoyed, and shared with your family. We hope to inspire our children to hold on to our roots as beautiful Luso Canadians.
Our Manifesto and Promise
We are a family-run business dedicated to keeping tradition alive. Whether you are stopping by for our signature house-made sandwiches, checking out our fresh weekly seafood arrivals, or picking up traditional Portuguese pantry staples, you are part of our family.
We invite you to visit us, taste the heritage, and join us in enjoying the good life the Portuguese way.
